Sporting Memories Museum Developed out of a love of sports, this family run museum began as a simple games room in their home that eventually sprawled over eight acres of land to include 16 buildings with an impressive collection of sport, leisure, music and bar related items, from canoes to darts, gramophones to juke boxes. Visitors are welcome to explore the lake, waterfalls and lush trees that surround the buildings. Coffee and tea are available and guests are welcome to bring a picnic. Established in 1935, Te Awamutu is itself a piece of history as the oldest museum in Waikato. The attractive buildings house contemporary displays amounting to a 29,000-piece collection of historical objects, photographs, maps and archival material of the taonga Maori and European settlement. An interesting exhibit, True Colours, is dedicated to Te Awamutu's most famous sons, Tim and Neil Finn of the contemporary pop bands Split Enz and Crowded House.
